What a short week it has been, but oh-so special and wonderfully intense! After a mini break, our Little Forest Folk-ers came back full of lovely and infectious energy, so we made the most of it with adventure walks or shall I say adventure little runs and hops! Guided by the magical songs from birds we enjoyed the best natural and free soundtrack ever! From bird watching, nest building, cloud gazing, a visit to the little chicks to a very busy mud kitchen. The forest has been buzzing with laughter, curiosity, and busy boots exploring every corner!🌈✨🌼🌸🐣
This week has been all about Maths, focusing on number recognition and counting at our ever-popular mud kitchen. Our little chefs followed muddy “recipes” for mud cakes and pies, carefully counting sticks, flower petals and rocks as ingredients. The star of the show? The famous rock cake, so popular that the recipe remains top secret (guarded closely by our tiny culinary experts!). We also enjoyed our core story Goldilocks and the Three Bears using bowls of mud-porridge to compare sizes and using scales to explore weight - because at Little Forest Folk, maths is always more fun with a sprinkle of mud! 🐻🐻🧸🥣🧑🍳
Have you heard the birds this wonderful week? Well, we certainly did! All around camp - and everywhere we walked, ran and played - the little chatty birds seemed to sing right along with us, as if they were part of our Forest journey. Their cheerful songs inspired lots of birdwatching adventures with children stopping to listen carefully and scan the trees for fluttering wings and tiny beaks. To help us become true birdwatchers, we made our very own binoculars using cardboard tubes, string, and sticky tape. We used long, sturdy tubes and carefully sawed them into smaller pieces. The children were fascinated to notice how different it felt sawing cardboard compared to wood - much quicker and easier, but still needing focus and control. Soon enough, we had a whole team of woodland explorers peering through their binoculars, ready to spot the next feathery visitor! We also went on an adventure walk to collect natural resources and used them to build nests in the most secret spots in tree trunks! 🪶🦜🪺🌳
To wrap up the week, we enjoyed learning all about different types of birds and turned our climbing tree into a wonderfully busy aviary. We began by reading Quentin Blake’s Cockatoos at circle time and practised our “finger numbers” up to 10 through the story of the ten cheeky birds hiding all around Professor Dupont’s house. And just like in the book, before we knew it our soft toy birds had disappeared around camp too! The children went on a mission to find them all using a checklist, spotting puffins, bluetits, a duck and even a chatty parrot tucked between bushes, perched high in the branches or hiding behind logs. Once every bird had been rescued, they were proudly returned to our fabulous aviary - complete with a brand new water fountain made from a bucket and hose, perfect for our feathered friends to enjoy! 🦢🐧🦆🦅🦜🌿💦
